Horror via Chatroulette

Fan of Chatroulette? Me neither but many excitable teenage boys enjoy nothing more than the thrill of searching through the hordes of other young men, to find an elusive pair of women’s breasts.

The viral campaign for “The Last Exorcism” takes advantage of these helpless souls. Enticing them in with the prospect of a young lady undressing and then scaring the living hell out of them, as she transforms into a demon possessed by the devil.

With already over 200,000 YouTube views, The Last Exorcism is receiving global recognition on a shoestring media budget.

I wasn’t aware of this until I saw this blog post so thanks for bringing it to my attention. Its impressive! I love how people back away from a screen when something makes them jump or scared!

This is a brilliantly creative use of a seemingly useless service, however I do wonder if they really missed a trick or two with this. It would have been interesting to see how this played out as a campaign, possibly by not displaying branding, and creatively seeding across the web in order to generate initial buzz before eventually revealing the website it was promoting.

It certainly gets you thinking about the advertising possibilities for seemingly non-commercialised platforms!
