The I (heart) NY logo is one of the most recognisable pieces of design in the world.
History of the logo
Back in 1977 the New York State needed a new ad campaign for its city. Crime was out of control and businesses and locals were moving away to safer places, which had an adverse effect on tourism. New York turned to Madison Avenue for the answer, who, in turn looked to young graphic designer, Milton Glaser.
For a job that had such a low budget and thinking it would only ‘be a three-month campaign’, Glaser donated his doodle (scribbled in the back of a yellow taxi) of the concept for free and asked only for expenses.
Today
Fast forward almost 35 years, and the I (Heart) NY design remains one of the most recognisable pieces of design in the world that has taken on a life of its own.
Listen to the Radio 4 show on BBC iPlayer to hear how Milton Glaser managed to create such a simply design that is still to this day so entwined with New York City, its people, and continues to create revenue for the State. (Milton Glaser interviewed by Alastair Sooke, Art Journalist, Radio 4)
