My first thought was… “I bet this works well on an iPad” and sure enough, it fits exactly in the browser window, landscape and portrait. I guess the only thing missing at the moment are gesture controls but I’m sure they are coming.

Visually it reminds me of Flipboard, TED talks and other apps that organise feeds. Organising content into a flexible 8 column grid, giving content a sense hierarchy, it is easy to scan the articles to find what you want, but also I find it much more about the discovery of new content.

What do you think of the new BBC homepage?

Last night was the last episode of the BBC series, Human Planet. I found the content and imagery of these programmes really engaging and inspiring but what I really loved about these programmes was their placement of subtitles.

Rather than just keeping the position of the subtitles the same, they were positioned in relation to what was occurring in the frame. Attention to detail and thought had been put into the placement of the subtitles to create a composition of text and image that worked well.

I didn’t even find it distracting with the text moving around the screen. I actually found it more engaging. In a way it reminded me of the comic book effect what was used for the subtitles in Heroes. If you missed the series, I would recommend checking it out on the iPlayer.
